Kooyong gives new life to a 1905 Federation Arts and Crafts home for a young family of four, preserving its architectural gravity while introducing light and openness. Set back from a busy road on a leafy block, the 250 sqm brick house holds presence through its thick stucco, low roof, twisted pillars and timber detailing. The rear was expanded with French windows and doors which draw the garden into daily life. Consistent tonality unifies existing elements with new additions, including custom limestone fireplaces, reinstated cornices and finely detailed joinery, each informed by the home’s immaculately preserved heritage character. This approach heightens the home’s historic charm while providing a contemporary foundation for the family to layer with their heirlooms and stories.
